The Challenge
West Brom Superstore was refurbishing premises formerly used as a car showroom to establish a new large supermarket in West Bromwich; they were looking to generate a substantial part of their future energy needs from solar energy so as to both minimise future energy costs and limit carbon emissions. They also had the problem that their roof required some remediation work before solar panels could be fitted.
Why Econergy?
Econergy was able to design a system, based on SolarEdge technology that provides West Brom Superstore with their target solar system capacity and that incorporates 200kWh of battery energy storage (featuring one of the first applications of SolarEdge CSS-OD batteries in the UK).
Econergy also had the experience and expertise to carry out the necessary preliminary roof remediation works.
Econergy's proposal for undertaking the roof remediation work together with the supply and installation of the 261.25kWh SolarEdge solar system with 204.8kWh battery energy storage was very competitively priced.
Econergy were therefore able to provide West Brom Superstore with full solution and capability required at a very competitive price.
Our Solution

Econergy both undertook a physical inspection of the roof and took drone photographs. We used the information to model the roof enabling us to design a layout of the solar panels that fitted around rooflights and other roof features.

Econergy also designed the electrical layout of the system and dealt, on West Brom Superstore's behalf, with obtaining the requisite DNO approvals to connect the system to the Grid.

We organised the roof remediation works and installation and commissioning of the system to fit within West Brom Superstore's refurbishment work programme and helped West Brom Superstore to obtain an export tariff.
Results & Impact
- In the first six months after the solar energy system was installed in late April 2025, the system generated over 150MWh of solar electricity, the majority of which was exported as the supermarket had not been opened.
-
When the supermarket opens in late 2025 the solar energy system is set to make a significant contribution to its energy needs.
